To the mom carrying the invisible weight of guilt… I see you, I feel you.
You love your family so much.
You’re doing your best.
But no matter how much you do, it just never feels like enough.
You wonder if you should be more patient, more organized, more available, more something.
And this weekend — Mother’s Day — instead of soaking in the celebration, you might be feeling any of the following:
“Am I failing as a mom?” “Why does this still feel heavy?” “Am I allowed to rest today, if I do, will everything fall apart?” “Why do we even celebrate Mother’s Day? It's always an argument!" "I just want to be left alone!!"
I’ve been there and I want to share with you what I’ve learned.
Mom guilt is not from God.
I know how hard it is not to feel guilty about the house being dirty, not spending enough time with your family, homeschooling your kids or wanting to have a career. I have had all these feelings and some days I still do.
Before we even realize it the guilt creeps in…
Guilt shows up in quiet moments.
It whispers things like:
“You should’ve yelled less.”
“You didn’t play enough today.”
“You cooked chicken nuggets again”
“You’re home all day — why isn’t the house cleaner?”
It doesn’t matter how much you’ve done — it always feels like you need to do more.
And without realizing it, we carry that guilt into everything:
Mother’s Day brunch. Bedtime prayers. Even our rest. Our daily life.
But here’s the truth:
Guilt thrives in unrealistic expectations…
But, grace thrives in presence.
God never said we had to do it all, in fact He doesn’t want us to do it all.
He never told us that “good” motherhood looks like perfection, hustle or never needing a break. He actually shows us the opposite.
“He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.” — Isaiah 40:11
God leads gently.
He carries us — even as we’re carrying others.
Motherhood was never meant to be about performing.
It was meant to be about stewarding — with grace, intention and rest.
You Don’t Have to Earn Rest or Worth
One of the biggest lies we believe is that we have to do more to be more.
We think:
- “Once I catch up, I’ll rest.”
- “Once the house is clean, I’ll slow down.”
- “Once the kids are okay, I can take care of me.”
But let me gently remind you…
You don’t need to do more to be enough.
You are already enough because God says you are.
You don’t need to earn rest, God rested on the 7th day. Jesus rested while He was here on earth. You don’t need to prove your worth, we are worthy in God’s eyes. And you certainly don’t need to feel guilty for not being perfect, none of us are perfect. If we think we have to be perfect, we are telling our kids they need to be perfect.
A New Way Of Thinking
Breaking free from mom guilt doesn’t mean we stop caring, it means we stop carrying what God never asked us to carry. Wow, this hits a little hard, doesn’t it? I like to be in control and surrendering control to God is hard. God wants to help us, that’s why he wants us to to surrender our children, the control, our to-do list. When we realize that God is with us and we stop trying to carry everything
We can:
- Say yes to what matters and no to what doesn’t
- Ask for help
- Let the laundry wait
- Choose presence over perfection
- Accept that peace doesn’t come from doing more — it comes from trusting more
You Were Never Meant to Carry It All
If you’re feeling the weight this weekend — let it go.
You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You’re not alone.
In those moments where you feel the weakest…
The most tired…
The most overwhelmed…
That’s often where God meets you most powerfully, in ways we could never imagine. Just sit still for a few moments with God and let Him speak to you.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
You don’t have to push through. You don’t have to figure it all out. You just have to take the next faithful step — even if it’s a slow one. You have to trust Him with today.
