The Weekend Reset That Saves My Sanity All Week Long

By the time Friday afternoon hits, I can feel the weight of the week in every corner of our home — the kids room messy, dirty bathrooms and a messy homeschool room.

I know if I ignore it, it will get worse over the weekend and Monday will be crazy and chaotic.
But if we take a little time as a family to reset?
Instead I know I can walk into the week feeling confident and ready for a new week.

This is the weekend reset that saves my sanity — not because it’s Pinterest-perfect, but because it’s simple, realistic, easy and something we do together. This works, this is what we have been doing for years.

Step 1: We Reset as a Family

This isn’t “mom cleans while everyone else relaxes.” Everyone helps. We want our kids to learn responsibility and my hubby knows how hard I work during the week.

  • The kids each pick a small job (tidying their room, cleaning the bathroom together or dusting light fixtures.
  • Jim and I do things like cleaning our bathroom or vacuuming and mopping the floors.
  • I’ve found the kids work better with music, set a timer for 15 minutes and knock it out.

👉 Why it matters: It reminds all of us that our home is a team effort, not just my responsibility.

Step 2: Laundry

  • We wash sheets and towels on the weekend, if we haven’t done them yet.
  • Kids make their own bed  (imperfectly is just fine!).
  • We make sure all laundry is caught and we’re ready for the week..

👉 Why it matters: Towels and sheets are clean for the week.

Step 3: Food Reset

I’ve learned that food is one of the biggest stress points during the week, so weekends are when we reset:

  • Meal plan for the week.
  • Quick grocery run together.
  • Prep 1-2 proteins and breakfasts and get snacks ready.

👉 Why it matters: When meals are handled, I feel like half the week’s chaos is already under control. And I don’t have to hear what’s for snack.

Step 4: Calendar + Connection

We take a few minutes to look at the week ahead — therapy appointments, activities, lessons, work. Everyone knows what’s coming. We have everything written on a big calendar in our homeschool room.

But we also make sure to connect: maybe a family walk, a game or movie night. Because a reset isn’t just about the house — it’s about our relationships. Friday night is usually date night for me and Jimmy at home, while the kids watch a movie. Saturday is family day – farmers market, coffee, walk and resets together.

Step 5: My Personal Reset

Lastly, I carve out a little reset for myself. A cup of coffee, time with my Bible, maybe even planning my work priorities.

👉 Why it matters: When I’m centered, I can handle whatever the week throws our way. The better I plan for the week, the more confident I feel going into a new week. Life is crazy and we have a lot going on and this helps me so much.

💗 Friend, weekends don’t have to be about catching up on everything. They can be about resetting just enough so you step into the week with peace instead of panic.

It’s not about perfect — it’s about creating rhythms that help your family (and your sanity) thrive.
