God Calls Us to Be the Light—Right Where We Are

Do you ever feel like God is trying to get your attention? I’ve been feeling this way for the last few months.

Towards the end of 2025, I was listening to a few podcasts and spending time in devotions, and one message kept showing up over and over again: God calls us to be the light of the world.
It felt like everywhere I turned, that truth was right there waiting for me and God was like I’m talking to you.

This is something I’ve prayed about often—wanting to be the light of the world—but for some reason, this time it hit me differently.

In Matthew 5:14–16, Jesus says:

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

What really struck me was this part: they put the light on a stand so it can give light to everyone in the house.

That made me pause and ask myself some honest questions.

Am I shining my light for everyone—or only the people I feel comfortable with?
Am I shining my light in my own home?
Where am I hiding it?
Am I afraid to let it shine?

Before Jesus Talks About Being the Light

Before Jesus talks about being the light of the world, He begins this chapter with the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes—“Blessed are…”

That matters.

Because when we live out the Beatitudes, the result is light. Wow I never realized this and this got me thinking.

Humility.
Mercy.
Peacemaking.
Faithfulness.

I’ve studied the Beatitudes before, but after reading this passage again, I felt God nudging me to go back and really sit with them. If I’m called to be the light of the world, I want to make sure I’m living in a way that reflects His heart.

Light Doesn’t Have to Be Loud, It Needs to Be Bright

Here’s something God reminded me:
Being the light doesn’t mean being loud or visible to everyone, but it does mean being bright.

Sometimes it looks simple.

  • Kindness in your home

  • Sharing a Bible verse

  • Choosing grace instead of frustration

  • Being faithful when no one else sees

As moms, we have a unique opportunity to be the light in ways others don’t. We get to be the light in our homes—for our husbands and our kids.

And honestly? That’s not always easy.

There are days I lose my patience. Days I raise my voice. Days I know I’m not reflecting the light I want to. On those days, I have to stop, ask for forgiveness, and try again. And sometimes that means again and again.

Today has been a hard day. It’s one of those days where being the light feels difficult—when I’d rather lock myself in my room and cry.

But those are often the days when choosing light matters most.

Choosing grace.
Choosing faithfulness.
Choosing to show up again.

“Being the light doesn’t have to be loud—sometimes it looks like choosing grace on the hardest days.”

You Are Called to Be the Light—Right Where You Are

It doesn’t matter if you’re a working mom, a stay-at-home mom or a homeschool mom.

God hasn’t called you to be the light somewhere else. He’s called you to be the light right where you are.

And even on the hard days, His grace meets us there. We just need to show up and shine.

Love and Grace,

Billie-Jo
