I’m a planner. I like knowing what is going to happen. I wish I knew God’s plan for my life. I want the full picture. I want here are your next ten steps.
But that’s not how God works.
Instead, He invites us to trust Him one step at a time.
This is something I’ve had to learn over and over and over.
One verse that has been sitting with me lately is this:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
This verse has always felt comforting to me, but recently I noticed something I hadn’t paid much attention to before.
The lamp isn’t shining far ahead into the future, It’s right at our feet…for the next step.
A Lamp at Our Feet, Not a Spotlight on the Whole Path
When I think about a lamp at my feet, I picture just enough light to see where I’m standing and where to step next. When I think about it this way, it makes a difference. I’m okay not knowing the step for tomorrow or next month or even next year.
I know God has given me just this step.
God’s Word doesn’t usually light the entire road at once. It lights the part of the path we’re walking right now. And honestly? That’s grace.
If God showed us everything at once, most of us would feel overwhelmed, anxious or scared by what’s ahead. We wouldn’t have faith or hope. Instead, He gently guides us forward—moment by moment, step by step. This is where faith, trust and hope is built.
This Kind of Light Is a Gift
So often, we want to know before we obey. We want to know the outcome before we move and take that step.
But God builds trust differently.
He builds it by inviting us to stay close to Him through reading the Bible, listening and obeying in one step at a time. And then He gives light for the next step. He gives us what we can handle
What This Looks Like in My Life
As a mom, this matters more than I sometimes realize.
God’s Word lights our path when:
- I don’t know how to handle a hard parenting moment
- I feel confident about a decision
- I’m overwhelmed by everything on my plate
- I’m trying to figure out what faithfulness looks like in my current season
Sometimes the “next step” is as simple as:
- Opening the Bible before reacting
- Whispering a prayer before responding
- Choosing grace instead of control
- Asking, “God, what would You have me do right now?”
I’ve learned that I don’t need the full plan—I just need daily guidance and that comes from God and His Word.
Staying Close to the Light
A lamp only helps if we stay close to it.
God’s Word isn’t meant to be something I check off my to-do list or only turn to when I’m desperate. The Bible is meant to walk with us every step of the way. When I stay rooted in Scripture, I stay grounded and I’m not walking blindly. I’m walking with light each step and day.
When we stay rooted in Scripture, we aren’t walking blindly. We’re walking with light—right where we are.
Encouragement for Moms
If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed or like you don’t know what’s next, let this encourage you:
You’re not lost or behind. You don’t need the whole path lit up. God isn’t asking you to see everything. He’s asking you to trust Him with the next step.
And His Word is enough light for that.
Pause and Reflect
Where in my life am I asking God to show me the whole path, instead of trusting Him with the next step?
What is one small, faithful step God might be inviting me to take today through His Word?
Love and Prayers,
Billie-Jo
