Coffee + Connection: Small Daily Things That Keep Me Grounded

Motherhood can be really full — homeschooling, therapies, meals, laundry, cleaning, working and everything in between. It’s easy to slip into survival mode, moving from one task to the next without ever catching your breath.

But I’ve learned something over the years: it’s the little things — those small, intentional pauses — that keep me grounded and calm. That truly makes a difference in my day.

For me, that looks like starting my mornings with God and moving my body. Lately, I’ve been going to bed earlier and even waking up before my alarm, feeling rested and ready. Later in the morning or early afternoon, I enjoy a cup of coffee as a reset — not because I need it, but because I enjoy it.

My Morning Anchor: Devotions + Movement

I start my mornings with quiet time with God and a workout. It’s my favorite time of the day — calm and quiet, just me and God while the night ends and the sun comes up.

Those two things — feeding my spirit and moving my body — help me feel centered before the day begins. I usually get the whole house to myself for about 30 minutes before Jimmy wakes up, and that time is priceless.

I stopped worrying about it being perfect and that’s made a difference. It’s about rhythms that fuel me so I can pour into my family from a healthier place. Years ago, I realized that if I don’t move my body in the morning, it likely won’t happen later in the day — so I start there after devotions.

Coffee — Not Because I Need It, But Because I Enjoy It

I don’t rush to coffee first thing. For me, it’s a late-morning or early-afternoon ritual. By then, homeschool is usually wrapped up or we’ve made it through the busiest part of the day, and that cup of coffee feels like a mental reset.

Sometimes I:

  • Sit outside with my coffee while the kids play and I catch up on work.
  • Sit silently and talk to God.
  • Simply take a few deep breaths before moving into the rest of the day.

It’s not really about caffeine — it’s about pausing long enough to breathe, reset and finish the day strong.

Connection Over Coffee

Coffee also creates space for connection in my life:

  • Sitting with Jimmy and talking about our week.
  • Taking one of the kids out for a coffee date — one of our favorite little traditions.
  • Occasionally catching up with a friend over coffee.

It’s not the drink itself — it’s the pause that opens the door for connection.

The Power of Small Rituals

Beyond coffee, there are other little rituals that ground me:

  • A family walk after dinner.
  • A warm bath in the evening.
  • Lighting a candle as the day winds down.

These small things matter. They anchor us in the middle of chaos and remind us that life isn’t only about the big responsibilities — it’s also about the small moments that bring us peace.

💗 Friend, motherhood doesn’t have to mean rushing nonstop. These little daily things — time with God in the morning and a coffee reset later in the day — are what keep me grounded. They remind me to slow down and savor the season I’m in.
