Let’s be real with each other – some days, it feels like too much.
By Wednesday I was so frustrated, exhausted and wondering what happened. It didn’t matter how often I cleaned, the mess always returned.
There was always stuff not put away.
Laundry piles grew. The messes grew.
Crumbs on the counters.
I thought the answer was a deep clean on my home. You know, having someone come and clean my home, but that wasn’t the answer. First you’re cleaning your home for them to come and second the mess basically just appears after they leave.
Then one day I decided to try something and that was spend just a little time cleaning my kitchen, Nothing fancy, wiping counters and putting dishes away. Wow that little bit of my time made such a difference. I felt a little peace, overwhelm started to subside.
What I realized I needed was a reset I could actually stick with. A 15 minute reset is what really helped me.
A 15-minute reset in the middle of the week. I figure it’s just 15 minutes, I can reset a mess in our home.
Guess what? This changed everything — not just in my home, but in my heart. This simple reset started making the rest of the week easier and not as overwhelming.
So What Is a 15-Minute Reset?
It’s a short, focused block of time where we hit pause — not on life, but on the mess that builds up during it.
A reset isn’t about perfection. It’s about bringing order back into the chaos in small, doable ways.
In our home, a 15-minute reset often looks like:
- Everyone tidying one space (even just 1 room)
- Dishes loaded, counters wiped
- Shoes and papers put away
- A quick vacuum or sweep
- Sometimes, even just dimming the lights and lighting a candle
It’s a rhythm we use before or after dinner, but you can do it whenever your day feels like it’s unravelling. In fact we now do them every day.
And yes — we do it as a family.
Even if the kids grumble, they know it’s just 15 minutes — and it makes a huge difference in how the whole house feels.
Why It Works
I never really thought 15 minutes would make a difference, but man it can. I used to underestimate what 15 minutes really could do. I realized it didn’t just make a difference in my home, but in my mind too.
When I started doing 15 minute reset, I started noticing
- I wasn’t ending the day frustrated. I was going to bed not so stressed out.
- My mornings felt calmer. Waking up to a clean kitchen was a gift to my future self. I couldn’t believe what a difference this made to my mornings.
- My kids began to contribute more. When they knew what was expected — and it was short — they helped. I usually don’t get an attitude either,
- I felt more in control. Not of everything, but of the one thing I could do: resets.
How You Can Start One Today
Don’t overthink it. Just pick one time in your day when things naturally slow down — or when the chaos tends to peak — and give yourself (and your family) 15 minutes.
Start with one space, not the whole house. Maybe it’s the kitchen counters, bathroom counter, picking up toys, resetting the entryway, vacuuming or cleaning the kitchen table off.
Set a timer and put some music on.
15 minutes for a routine that will change your day. And just maybe your life, like it did mine.
You don’t need to do it all.
You just need to reset one space. One moment. One step.
